About the Role
As Engineering Student Intern you will apply engineering skills to both supporting R&D efforts and designing, building and testing a demonstration prototype vessel. Your focus will be to turn visions into reality while collaborating with our mechanical designers and aerodynamics experts. You will play a central role in our efforts by contributing to the building of prototypes quickly, safely, and at minimum cost. Your will experience the use of design tools, be involved with fabrication, material selection, process optimization and quality control gaining valuable experience while being a valuable member of the team.  You will also have a hands-on involvement in the instrumentation of prototypes and conducting experiments.  

We are looking for a creative and detail-oriented individual who can balance immediate goals with long-term scalability. Your insights will shape the future of marine transportation, helping us build and maintain a competitive edge as we continue to refine our intellectual property. You will report directly to an experienced Mechanical Engineer, and interface with the Head of Design and Technology.  You will work closely with our team in Squamish and other partners to bring our designs to life and build a highly valuable company. 

What You’ll Do  

The startup moves quickly through DMTA Cycles (Design-Make-Test-Analyse) and you will be involved at every step.  

  • Prototype Design: Design components, fixtures that will be part of the overall vessel, ensuring that they are manufacturable and operate as required. 
  • Prototype Fabrication: Develop fixtures, build, and refine prototypes based on engineering specifications and design requirements. 
  • Feasibility Studies: Support engineering in evaluating the feasibility of design concepts and fabrication techniques, receiving and providing insights and recommendations to guide project development.  
  • Collaboration: Work closely with product designers, engineers, and other team members to iterate on designs and address fabrication challenges. 
  • Tool and Equipment Management: Operate and maintain fabrication tools and equipment, ensuring they are in good working order and safe to use. 
  • Documentation: Maintain detailed records of the work performed, prototypes state, safety records, and experimentation results. 
  • Quality Control: Follow the guidance of leadership to ensure prototypes meet required specifications and quality standards before moving to the next stage of development. 
  • Innovation and Problem Solving: Contribute to the development of new fabrication techniques and solutions to overcome technical challenges. 

Your Background  

  • Education: Studying for a bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechatronics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, industrial engineering, Materials Science, or a related field.  
  • Research and Development: Demonstrate knowledge through school/university projects or previous work experience that you are capable of developing, fabricating, and instrumenting prototypes, including hands-on work with various materials, data acquisition, and fabrication techniques.  
  • Tool and Equipment Handling: Proficiency in operating and maintaining fabrication tools and equipment such as CNC machines, 3D printers, and manual machining tools is a plus. 
  • Project Management: Are familiar with organizing work, working with others, meeting deadlines and reporting on results. 
  • Innovation Mindset: Demonstrated ability to innovate and contribute to engineering projects and team performance.
